Tread Softly

These words were in a song I sang in High School and they've always stuck with me, for some reason. Today, in my Victorian Lit class, we read this poem and I grew to love these words more.

The Declaration of Stupidity

We hold these tests to be self-destroying, that all students are studying evenly, that they are endowed by their professor with certain unalienable study tips,that among these are Fun, Freedom, and the pursuit of the right study group. – That to secure these “good grades,” classes are instituted among students, deriving their extra credits from the consent of the TA, - That whenever any Form of Review Guide becomes unavailable to these striving geniuses, it is the Right of the Students to ask for or to receive it, and to institute a new Grading procedure, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to affect their Graduation and Success.

Meditation on Singledom

Perchance, she for whom the phone rings may at once find herself in the aura of the accepted, the dream of the dateable; and perchance she may think herself so much better than she is, as that they who are about to text her, and see her state, may have caused it to vibrate for me, and I know not that. Must all of singledom be shallow? The cell phone is accessible, multipurpose, so are all its functions; all that it is communicates admittance and recognition to all. When the single girl accepts the call, that action concerns the roommates; for that acquaintance is thereby connected to that body which is the local surroundings too, and infused into that organization whereof we seek to be a member – the TAKEN. And when that call is dropped or that chat deleted, that action concerns me: all society is of one service-provider, and is one on-going tête-à-tête; when one number becomes unattainable or unavailable, one contact is not deleted, but placed into the memory card of the former friendships or the databank of the dropped acquaintances; and every contact must be so upgraded; society employs several models which assist the user in the jump towards acceptance and popularity…as well as marriage. Such a minuscule mandate for communal connection is compulsory. Some buttons and keys are activated, some by touch-screen, some by thumb-grease, some by voice-activation or wireless remotes; but the cell phone’s hand is in every camaraderie and relationship, and its hand shall bind up the outcasts of all our scattered megabytes of invitations and flirtations. As therefore the phone that rings to a gathering calls not upon the queen bee only, but upon the worker bees to come, so this ringtone calls to us all; but how much more me, who am brought so near the dream wedding by this pixel.

There was a categorization as far as cliques (in which both hobbies and favorites, appearance and hygiene, were mingled), which of the invitations should ring to game nights or movie outings first thing on the weekend; and it was determined, that they should vibrate first that arose the latest. If we understand aright the rules of society and dating of this device that rings for our evening excursion, we would be glad to make singledom ours by staying out late, in that application, that it might be ours as well as hers (the ladies’ man or serial-dater) whose indeed it is.

That web-access doth bond her that thinks it doth to her destiny, the lonely with the social butterfly, the unnoticed with the bell of the ball; and though the lack of confidence intercept the signal again, yet from the moment the invitation is received this occasion wrought upon her brings, he is united to her soul mate. Who perks not her ear to the ding when it chimes? But who takes off her headphones for a glimmer of the desired caller? Who bends not her arm under the desk to conceal the twinkle from the screen in class when the professor ceases to observe? But who can remove the addiction from that party which is sounding the Siren call, as to the traveler Odysseus, from within the confines of the library stall?

No social rendezvous is private when one has roommates; every conversation, look, or encounter is not meaningless; it is all a part of the hoped-for fairy-tale ending. If a message be censored and contrived by the company, the lonely is the more obscure, as well as if she had never developed a personality on her own; any friend’s influence upon me reduces my true desire to achieve, because I am involved in the all-nighters and sleepovers, and therefore never cease to know for whom the phone rings; excuse me, for it rings for me now.

Neither can we call this a begging of misery, or a borrowing of wallow, as though we were not unaccepted enough of ourselves, but must retrieve more from the next dinner-group, in taking upon us the duty of the party planning. Truly, it were a forgivable desire if we did, for popularity is a ringtone, and scarce any man hath enough of it. No night-owl hath peace and quiet enough that is not matured and ripened by the sensation of the ring and made fit for dates and goings-on of the ward. If a girl carry an iPad in her purse, or a laptop in her backpack, and have not updated it into the most modern technology, her reception will not be enhanced as she journeys. Distraction is divine in the nature of it, but it is not score in the Sudoku, or the Album in the Facebook, that draws the attention, except we get nearer and nearer our goal, acceptance, by it. Her rival may be sick, and covered in zits, and this tribulation may lie in her eating habits or hygiene, as yellow teeth and sloppy eye-liner, and be of no use to her; but this phone, that tells me of my roommate’s popularity, propels and enhances the guy-girl-ratio: if by this consideration of another’s popularity I take mine own into contemplation, and so secure myself, by making my advertisement to my fellow singles, who are my only competition.

Called to serve the people of........

I have been called to serve in the Munich Germany/Austria mission.  I report to the Provo MTC on July 14th.  My mission was announced on February 13th and my mission president will begin serving July 1st.

Card Security

Something I love about Europe is that whenever you use your credit or debit cards they verify your signature. (In the US they don't even care.) A signature is a lot better than your ID. Technically, (according to credit card companies) they're legally not supposed to ask for your ID. And what about those lucky kids who get a credit card when they're 12 or 13, before they have an ID?!!? How are they supposed to verify the purchase? Anyways, I just feel more secure when they double check my signature before completing the transaction. Just one more thing that I love about Europe.

London Loving

Going places is a lot more fun when you can enjoy the sunshine of the top of a double-decker bus or walk as opposed to a dark, smelly Tube station.
  • The phrase "Mind the Gap" will drive you insane after one day.
  • British accents do NOT automatically make a boy more attractive. I know, it came as a shock to me too. They might not be the automatic aphrodisiac I thought, but seriously, they sure do help. Just not always.
  • Theater students are not always the wacky, insane, creepy people they were in High School. Most of the people in the program are theater majors and they're are sooo amazing. I've learned so much from them and I've learned to come out of my shell. In fact, I may recite my Shakespeare passage in front of the entire program (thanks to one theater major who's helping me practice in front of her using a lot of emotion)
  • Funky earrings are pretty ok. I'm beginning to warm up to them. It makes me think of Em-J everytime I see a really odd pair dangling off someone's earlobes.
  • The UK voltage has miraculously healed my dying computer. Back home a full charge was only 64%. Now - 82% and counting. Each day is a new surprise - not only for exciting emails from friends back home, but to see how long my computer will last.
  • Markets can be scary when merely glancing at an item they crawl up your back and try to get you to buy it. "Tventee quid, tventee quid...low price...bist in whole city...promiss" I just want to wander and enjoy, DON"T BOTHER ME.
  • Coins make more sense when they are sized according to value (definitely not the case in the UK). With the exception of the dime, the US coins are so logical compared to these UK nuggets. The 2p coin is bigger than the 50p which in turn is bigger than the 1 pound coin. The 5p is the smallest followed by the 1pm and then the 20p. Getting used to this odd assortment of metal took awhile and often still doesn't make sense.
  • Cheese is sooo much better when you can pick and choose what chunk you want. Especially when there's about 40 different kinds in a one foot square.
  • Sights are a lot closer together when you walk than if you take the Tube.
  • Wandering the city with nothing in particular to see is a lot more fun when you bring a friend.
  • English children are a lot more fashionable than I will ever be.

Wuthering Heights...Bollywood Style

Tonight I saw an interesting theatrical performance of Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights. The only real difference is that this version was BOLLYWOOD. Okay so that's a BIG difference and it was quite an experiment. The ending was tweaked and a couple key parts of the story left out, but the bulk of it was true to the book. The play was lively, colorful, and musical. Every so often, the characters would break out into song and dance. The costumes were phenomenal and the set was quite amazing. I can't say that I'd go see it again, but it was definitely worth the cheap tickets we found. Not having read the book beforehand, I went in with an open mind and a smile and came out with jiggling shoulders and interesting hand gestures. Overall, it was a fun experience and I'm glad I went (once). Amundsen was the one who I went with and she made the event even more entertaining. Her laughter was infectious and her insight fantastic. When leaving the theater she found the script and purchased it. Now she can relive the excitement anytime she wants. I, on the otherhand, left only with memories and a song stuck in my head.

HOLI Festival of Colour


Colour has new meaning after attending the Holi Krishna festival last month. Every few months or so, the Indian Krishna Temple hosts a culture festival full of music, dancing, culture sites, and last of all colour throwing. Attendee pay no entrance fee to attend the event, but there is a cost for the satchels of pastel powder of various colours.

This "party" is attended by a whole range of people, but mainly young college students go for the "Cultural colouring." Come wearing old clothes that you don't care about and be prepared to not see the sky or even your own nose as soon as the dust flies.
At the signal "Burning of the Witch", participants grab handfuls of powder from their bags and throw them into the air, at one another, and even on themselves. For about a minute or two the whole sky is coated with a thick fog of bright colours. When the dust settles, no one looks the way they came in. Head to toe is smeared with blotches and splotches of chalk and most of it didn't even come from your own bag of colour.

The highlight of this event is the pictures that come from it. I went with some friends from my ward and one guy suggested putting my camera in Seran-wrap so as to protect it from the chalk, but still keep it available for awesome pictures. What a great idea Ziroll!!! Before getting into the car, we dusted off and sat on newspapers and magazines.

The most tiring part of this experience was the cleaning process. I figured the easiest way to get myself and my clothes relatively clean was to just jump in the shower, clothes and all. That got about 1/4 of the colour off and then I had to scrub scrub scrub. 15 min of showering off, 10 min of hand scrubbing, 2 days of Oxy-clean soak and one cycle of washing with bleach and my once white shirt is now a faint tint of peach. I still wear it and it reminds me of a day of fun.

P.S. Wearing shorts and flip-flops is a must because it makes the clean up a load easier.
